On May 25th, George Floyd was killed by police and protestors rose up across the country. Their message was clear: divest from policing and invest in systems that will work for everyone and that will not target and terrorize citizens on the basis of race. Their message was loud, and yet another voice tried to be louder, a voice saying, “The world is on fire! Keep the peace!”

We hope we are loud enough when we say:
“I know you think the world is on fire
And you’re looking for somebody to blame
But the world has been on fire forever
You just started feeling the flame.”

If you are not willing to sacrifice a shred of your precious “peace” so that your black siblings can live free, so that they can BREATHE, we wrote this song for your ears. If you condemn the few riots that erupted amidst the peaceful protest but fail to condemn the systems that drove people to violence, this song is for your ears.

lyrics

You say, “Don’t look around right now, cover up all your senses
The world is burning down, I’m building up my defenses”
But there’s people shouting in the streets
How you gonna fight for a world that you can’t see?

I know you think the world is on fire
And you’re looking for somebody to blame
But the world has been on fire forever
You just started feeling the flame

Free up your mind right now, understand what you’re seeing
Our eyes were looking down, we didn’t know we needed freeing
But no one ever won a war without their eyes open to the ones they’re fighting for

I know you think the world is on fire
And you’re looking for somebody to blame
But the world has been on fire forever
You just started feeling the flame

Eyes open
Are your eyes open
Are my eyes open
We need our eyes open

I know you feel broken
But there’s no hoping
Without eyes open
I hope we’ve woken up

Eyes open
My eyes are open
Your eyes are open
We have our eyes open

We’re not so broken to be past hoping
With our eyes open
I swear we’ve woken up

And I know you think the world is on fire
And you’re looking for somebody to blame
But the world has been on fire forever
Baby are you feeling the flame?

I know you think the world is on fire
(There's people shouting in the streets)
(Fight for me!)
And I know you know there’s someone to blame
(There's people shouting in the streets)
(Fight for me!)
Cause the world has been on fire forever
(Fight for me!)
You just started feeling the flame

about

The Gender Gnomes Brooklyn, New York

We're The Gender Gnomes.

We're your friendly neighborhood Brooklyn-based indie-folk- jazz-pop duo. Separately, we are Rachel, singer of songs and player of flutes, and Pat, player of guitars and basses and mandolins and saxophones and trumpets and...a bunch of stuff. Together, we're songwriters and home-recorders and avid music lovers. We love a good lyric and we're suckers for a jaunty beat. ... more
